Cut Lawn

Cut Lawn | East Wenatchee, WA | 2013

Sam thought his beret looked best when he wore it low over his right eye. Like an artist. It also blocked the morning glare while he made east-west cuts. His technique was to set the blade a quarter-inch higher on alternate rows to heighten contrast between lawn stripes. Another trick: Back the mower over fresh-cut areas to add a cross-wise texture. Sometimes visitors to the grounds praised Sam for his mowing skills. “Beautiful,” they’d say. The flattery prompted Sam to adjust his beret low over his right eye. Just like an artist.
