The good dog Joey hesitated before jumping the creek, but not for long. Everything important to him — fetch ball, doggie treats, loving master — were on the other side and moving on down the trail. Although capable of easily bounding the narrow sluice, Joey clearly wasn’t confident of his own ability. The coursing water looked deeper and faster than it was; its width too big a barrier. But motivation is a strange thing. When all you love is drifting away, there’s nothing left to do but take a giant leap of faith.
