Determining the location of a cemetery must involve all sorts of factors: Acreage, availability, irrigation, soil type and, of course, a dramatic terrestrial view for all those lingering souls. In fact, I thought for decades that’s why graveyards were sited in pretty places, where the beauty of grassy dells and sky-filled hilltops stretches into eternity. But no. Burying our dead where the world unfolds, where we can witness the merging of heaven and earth, is a consideration for the living. The shape of clouds, curve of horizon, smell of grass, tickle of wind and warmth of sun are keen sensations of our glorious earthbound existence. The cemetery reminds us: Our loved ones are gone, but here we stand, hearts beating, in the midst of it all.
