The owner of the commercial pumpkin patch had installed an inflatable castle, complete with dragon, to attract families. But the giant lizard was too scary. At the field’s edge, a handful of kids shook their heads: “Uh-uh, no way” were they going near that snarly beast, even if it was a blow-up toy. Like this one, many simple experiences can be ruined by such pleasure escalation. The beautiful vista, satisfying on its own, now “improved” with ziplines. The inflatable pool float that now boasts a built-in boom box. A cheeseburger now with added bacon, ham, guacamole, onion crisps and bourbon-flavored barbecue sauce. Too much. The kids likely would have loved searching the field rows for their perfect pumpkin. Just that, nothing more.
