A favorite novelist, Mark Helprin, once had a hero declare that a credit card, knapsack and good shoes are all that’s needed to seek adventure. Especially the shoes. You step out the door and start walking. Each step brings you closer to the intersection of your innermost desires and new experience — one that could change your life. Years ago, I strolled with a friend who pointed to the neighborhood scene before us. Visual spelling, he called it. A tall hedge and sidewalk formed an “L.” A coiled hose hanging on a garage wall: “O.” Boards standing upright in a bin: “V.” Power lines extending from a pole: “E.” All right there: LOVE. For me, it spelled a new way of seeing that changed how I take pictures. My friend showed me the path, and I started walking.
