Decades ago, residents in the small community of Malott boosted their communal dream with a solid, four-walled prompt to make their town better. Headquarters of the Malott Improvement Club still sits not far from the post office. It’s like an apple on the kitchen counter to encourage healthy eating. Or a kid’s photo taped to the dashboard as reason to buckle up. I’m unsure if the building still has the power to inspire, but there’s evidence it does — the town stands as a tidy, green oasis amid arid hills of rock and sage.
