Biking Dune

Biking Dune | Trinidad, WA | 2017

The kid couldn’t have been more than 12 years old, yet he was a master of mountain biking. He tirelessly pedaled, braked, sledded and soared on the dune, clearly intent on etching his presence across every patch of sand. I wanted to ask him why, but he wouldn’t stop long enough to chat. I could imagine him in 25 years explaining: “I want to look back and see what I’ve done, where I’ve been, how I affected the world.” But at age 12, he just whooped joyfully with every leap and turn. A final uphill assault took him to the ridge line, where he paused a few seconds to survey his tracks and was gone — leaving behind evidence of his art.
