Offshore Occurrence | Bar Harbor, ME | 2018
A giant cruise ship — like a space vessel floating in orbit — first caught our attention. It awaited water taxi after water taxi ferrying thousands of passengers who had waddled on sea legs to browse Bar Harbor’s boutiques. As we watched, sun, sea, smoke and rising vapor conspired to blot out the ship for just a few seconds. I imagined it might not reappear, that it had perhaps slipped away, gone somewhere, those cruising thousands totally unaware they’d slid sideways along a cosmic wrinkle. At least until the buffet closed. But no. The ship re-emerged in all its glory, decks alive with tiny passenger specks, like ants in resort wear. The ship’s crew bustled, too, to foil any delays caused by tardy shoppers or inter-dimensional portals.
