Pole | East Wenatchee, WA | 2017
Every pole has a story. Across the rural West, thousands of lone, isolated poles — fence posts to power poles — stand as mute sentinels to … well, who knows what? Each one’s worldly purpose ranges (I’m guessing) from sign display to gate hanger to tree brace to antenna upright to night-light stanchion to boundary marker to back-scratcher for livestock, and more. Somehow, through the years, those purposes faded. Then vandals, weather and inevitable aging took their toll. Personally, I relish the mystery of maverick poles — why here? how long? what now? Basically, the very questions we ask ourselves.
