Smoke

Smoke | Entiat, WA | 2017

We’ve been robbed of prime-time summer these last few years. Wildfires here and beyond have smothered our perfect weather (August-September) under a blanket of smoke. Sadly, it’s curtailed much outdoor recreation. Residents blame climate change, forest mismanagement, increased lightning, and crazy people with matches. The smoke has benefits, however. Vegetable gardens seem to thrive in the filtered light. Indoor shopping booms when outside air is — cough! — unbreathable. And photographs take on a hazy, painterly quality that gives popular landscapes the look of another place, another world.
