One of life’s great gifts is the unexpected bathroom. I speak of ones hidden amid the urban maze or installed miles into what we all thought was wilderness. The ones for which some sympathetic soul — a highway engineer or Forest Service ranger — decided that here is where most people will have the urge. Here is the spot for an aptly named “comfort station.” Here is where we’ll dig a hole, and damn the expense. Unsung heroes, they are. Seers of the future.
