Ferns

Ferns | Cashmere, WA | May 2019

Urban Nature Series | One wonder of ferns is that they live a double life. The spore-making fronds we see along shady trails are their public face. Underneath are their alter egos — tiny heart-shaped plants called gametophytes that thrive hidden in forest duff. Each phase develops separately yet contributes to the whole. Two things merging into one thing. My deeper selves stir with appreciation.
